Inspection of lateral surfaces with NELA VisionCheck Configure

For parts made out of different materials that require a highly precise defect inspection on their inner and outer lateral surfaces, NELA has added a special feature to its VisionCheck image processing software. The new function is based on images captured by up to 12 cameras inside the lateral surface sensor. The individual cameras, which are arranged in a circle in the upper area of the sensor each capture a specific area of the lateral surface using mirror deviation. These images overlap only slightly and provide a complete 360° view of the inner and/or outer lateral surface of the part. Up to now, each image of each camera had to be evaluated independently. The new software feature allows putting together the individual images to one overall picture of the lateral surface. For parts with slits, grooves, bore holes, incisions, indentations or similar characteristics, the inspection zones can always be attached to the same reference edge so that all following parts can be inspected no matter what their position underneath the sensor. This makes the optical surface inspection even more precise and reliable and helps further reducing pseudo waste.

The new software addition is particularly beneficial for parts whose lateral surfaces need to fulfill certain functions, such as sealing and who possess specific properties such as slits, grooves, bore holes, incisions, indentations or similar which shall not be identified as defects. Examples are infusion stoppers for medical applications, metallic parts with cuts and notches, or burnished sockets. The wind-up image is also suited to control the presence (or absence) of the part’s properties.

With the wind-up image, NELA provides a versatile new function to enhance the quality of the surface inspection – and therefore also the quality of your parts!
